The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued Yellow Level 2 and Orange Level 5 warnings for KwaZulu-Natal as heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to hit the province from tonight until Thursday morning.
Yellow Level 2 Warning (South-Western KZN)
The Level 2 warning highlights the likelihood of at least 40mm of rainfall over the south-western parts of KZN, which may lead to localised flooding and disruptions. Potential impacts include:
- Flooding of low-lying areas, roads, and informal settlements.
- Damage to mud-built houses.
- Increased risk of minor road accidents due to slippery conditions and poor visibility.
Orange Level 5 Warning (North-Western and Most of KZN)
A more severe Orange Level 5 warning has been issued for the north-western parts of the province, with up to 100mm of rainfall expected in some areas. This warning extends to most parts of KZN, including coastal and interior regions, with significant flooding risks. Possible consequences include:
- Severe flooding of roads, bridges, and settlements.
- Structural damage to mud-based houses.
- Disruptions to essential services such as water, electricity, and communication.
- Life-threatening conditions due to fast-flowing streams and deep waters.
- Major traffic disruptions as key roads may become impassable.
Authorities Urge Caution
Residents are advised to take precautions and avoid flooded areas. Motorists should exercise caution on wet roads, and communities in flood-prone areas are urged to stay alert for emergency updates.
