The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has announced the temporary suspension of lectures following violent protests at several of its campuses. The disruptions, reportedly led by a group of protestors, including individuals who are not registered students, have raised serious safety concerns for staff and students.
In response to the unrest, DUT’s Executive Management Committee (EMC) and Senate Executive Committee (Senex) convened to assess the situation and plan the way forward. The university has strongly condemned the violence, intimidation, and disregard for the rights of others, reaffirming that it will not yield to demands made through unlawful means.
As a precautionary measure, all lectures at DUT’s seven campuses will be suspended on Tuesday, 18 February 2025. However, online lectures will resume on Wednesday, 19 February 2025, until further notice. Despite the temporary suspension of in-person learning, the university remains open, and staff are expected to report to their workstations as usual. Late registration for students will also continue.
DUT has warned that further disruptions will not be tolerated. Law enforcement authorities are on high alert, with plans to arrest and charge individuals responsible for the unlawful protests, particularly those in violation of a High Court Interdict. The university has already identified some of the perpetrators.
Acknowledging the distress caused by the incidents, DUT has assured students and staff that support services are available. Those affected by the violence and intimidation can seek counselling through Student Counselling & Health, while staff can access support via Employee Wellness services.
The university has urged all students to complete their late registration by Friday, 07 March 2025, to avoid disruptions to their academic progress. First-year students can seek assistance from Student Admissions, while returning students can receive support from their respective faculty offices.
DUT has also warned against the spread of misinformation, particularly on social media, and advised students and staff to rely on official university communications shared via DUT PinBoard, DUT4life, and the DUT website.
The university has thanked the DUT community for their patience and cooperation as it works to restore a safe and conducive learning environment.
