The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has confirmed the deployment of law enforcement officials to Dutywa following a protest by residents demanding better service delivery.

Protesters have reportedly been burning tyres and blocking traffic, causing significant disruption on the N2 highway between Mthatha and East London, affecting motorists traveling through the area.

Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for the provincial Transport Department, urged drivers to exercise caution while navigating the region.

"The core of the protest is centered on demands for water, housing, and access roads," Binqose explained. "While we are addressing these concerns, our immediate priority is to restore traffic flow. The N2 is a critical national road, vital not just for the province, but for the entire country."
