The local motorcycle community is mourning the loss of a fellow rider who tragically died in an accident on the R33 near New Hanover on Sunday afternoon.
The fatal crash occurred during the Africa Ubuntu Bikers’ Breakfast Run, an event dedicated to promoting respect, brotherhood, and biker safety. While the gathering was otherwise successful, the accident cast a somber shadow over the day’s events.
The ride began in Durban on Sunday morning, with participants making their way to King Edward Park in Greytown. According to Vernon Redgard, a member of the Out on a Limb Bikers Club, the event proceeded smoothly until the afternoon.
“It was around 2 p.m. when we received news of the accident as riders were heading home,” Redgard said.
The biker, a member of the President’s Club, had already departed for home when he was involved in a collision with a double-cab vehicle. Redgard described how bystanders, including the vehicle’s driver—who appeared to have medical training—attempted to assist, even administering a drip in an effort to resuscitate the rider.
“Sadly, our brother did not make it. This was unexpected, and we are mourning with his family,” he added.
Authorities attended the scene, and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
