Transport officials are optimistic about preventing a potential fuel crisis at OR Tambo International Airport, following a recent disruption caused by a fire at the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa. The department announced that the fuel industry has secured over 121.1 million litres of jet fuel to meet the airport's needs.
The first shipment of the fuel, sourced from various suppliers, is expected to arrive in Durban on Saturday, with a second consignment scheduled to arrive ten days later.
Minister Barbara Creecy held a meeting with fuel industry representatives last week to address the immediate fuel shortages and discuss long-term solutions.
Department spokesperson Collen Msibi expressed appreciation for the patience shown by passengers, businesses, and other affected parties, acknowledging the inconvenience caused.
"The fuel industry has confirmed to ACSA that it secured 50 million litres of jet fuel from various suppliers. Additionally, 71.1 million litres were sourced on Friday, bringing the total to 121.1 million litres for OR Tambo," said Msibi.
The fuel will be imported through the Port of Durban via three vessels, with arrivals scheduled for February 1 and February 10, 2025.
