The eThekwini Municipality has deployed teams to assess the Southern Aqueduct following water reductions affecting multiple areas, including Queensburgh, Chatsworth, Umlazi, and Westville.

The aqueduct, which channels water from uMngeni-uThukela’s Durban Heights Water Treatment Works to 26 reservoirs, is currently facing a supply shortfall of approximately 100 megalitres per day.

Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana stated that measures are being implemented to manage demand and prevent system collapse. “This includes rationing available water to ensure equal distribution across affected areas,” she said.

Meanwhile, residents in parts of eThekwini and uMgungundlovu will experience reduced water supply for nearly a month, starting January 26, 2025. uMngeni-uThukela Water has shut down a 53-pipeline system to improve bulk water supply to the Umlaas Road Reservoirs.

Spokesperson Siyabonga Maphumulo confirmed that the work is expected to continue until February 22. “While we are increasing production from Midmar Water Works to boost supply, we urge communities to use water sparingly,” he said.

Areas expected to be affected include the outer west of eThekwini, Umbumbulu Reservoir, Eston, Mid Illovo, and Mkhambathini.
