A 21-year-old man was tragically shot and killed in a graveyard in Amoutana, KwaZulu-Natal, Thursday evening. The incident unfolded around 5:59 PM when the community reached out to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for immediate medical assistance.
RUSA officers and paramedics quickly responded to the scene and discovered the lifeless body of the victim in a prone position within the graveyard. The man had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his head and a single shot to his right hand.
According to a witness, the deceased, who had completed his Matric at a school in the Eastern Cape in 2024, had arrived in Amoutana earlier in the week to visit family. The witness described how the victim had been seated with two men at a local tuck shop when one of them suddenly drew a firearm and began shooting. The victim attempted to flee the scene, running into the graveyard, but was pursued by the assailants, who continued firing. The critically injured man collapsed in the graveyard, and the suspects fled the area in an unknown direction.
RUSA officers recovered 10 spent 9mm cartridges near the tuck shop, marking the scene of the shooting.
This is not the first tragedy to strike the family, as the victim’s older brother was also fatally shot in Amoutana in 2024. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and investigations are underway.
