The issue of unemployed qualified doctors in South Africa has escalated, with over 1,500 medical professionals currently without work. In response, a group of unemployed doctors in KwaZulu-Natal is taking a stand, organizing a march to raise awareness about the growing crisis and demand government action.
The protest is scheduled to take place on Monday morning, starting at the UNISA Pietermaritzburg campus.
Dr. Mxolisi Xulu, one of the organizers, shared the group’s motivation for the march. "Our Minister has stated that they don't owe us employment or placement, suggesting we either turn to the private sector or seek opportunities abroad. However, we studied here in South Africa, with support from the department for medical school, and we are committed to serving our communities. We are not leaving," Xulu explained.
The march aims to highlight the dire situation faced by qualified doctors struggling to find work, while calling on the government to take action to address the issue and provide opportunities for these healthcare professionals.
