KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating the murder of Mothobi Jacob Khoaele, a senior Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) official, who was shot dead in a drive-by shooting on Wednesday night.

Khoaele, PRASA’s infrastructure manager in KZN, was found dead in his vehicle on Shellbourne Road in La Lucia, north of Durban. The 53-year-old sustained multiple gunshot wounds in what appears to have been a targeted attack.

Emergency services responded to the scene shortly after 7:00 pm. ALS paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed that Khoaele was found in his double-cab Ford Ranger, riddled with bullet holes.

"Paramedics were directed to a bakkie on the roadway with multiple gunshot holes in the door and front of the vehicle. The driver, a male believed to be in his fifties, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do, and he was declared deceased at the scene," Jamieson said.

Police have opened a murder investigation as they work to determine the motive behind the killing.
