Struggle stalwart Major-General Keith Mokoape will be laid to rest today in Midrand, Johannesburg. The former intelligence chief of the ANC’s armed wing, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), passed away last weekend.

Mokoape played a pivotal role in MK’s military operations across southern Africa, holding leadership positions in Botswana, Mozambique, and Swaziland during the liberation struggle. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Order of Luthuli in Silver in 2018 for his dedication to the fight against apartheid.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile acknowledged Mokoape’s passing as a significant loss, particularly at a time when the ANC was drawing on the insights of struggle veterans to guide its renewal efforts.

Former Chief of the South African National Defence Force, General Solly Shoke, praised Mokoape’s lifelong commitment to the nation and the military.

“I can describe General Mokoape as a servant of the people who sacrificed his life to serve the country. He was a man of peace who ensured unity among those who served in integrated forces,” Shoke said.

Mokoape’s legacy as a dedicated freedom fighter and military leader will be honored at his funeral service today.
