Police have launched a manhunt for a key figure believed to have controlled illegal underground mining operations at the Stilfontein mine, following his escape from custody.
The suspect, a Lesotho national known as "Tiger," was among a group of illegal miners rescued during a court-ordered operation at Shaft 11 last week. National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that investigations are underway, and efforts are being made to identify police officials who may have aided in his escape.
According to authorities, Tiger was never properly booked into various stations where other illegal miners were detained and was not admitted to a local hospital for medical care. He is also facing accusations from resurfaced miners who allege that he was responsible for several deaths during the mining operations. Police continue their search for Tiger.
