A brave act of heroism ended in tragedy when a resident was shot while attempting to stop armed hijackers in Avoca. The incident occurred on Friday, January 10, around 7 PM on Gokal Road.

According to reports, three armed suspects in a white Toyota Quest followed a family to their driveway before holding them at gunpoint. The elderly homeowner was struck on the head with a firearm, sustaining injuries, while his wife was forcefully pushed aside. The hijackers then fled in the family’s silver Mercedes-Benz GLC, leaving the victims shaken and injured.

A visiting resident, who witnessed the attack, pursued the suspects in an attempt to intervene. However, the assailants opened fire, hitting him in the arm. Despite his injury, the victim managed to drive himself to the hospital, where he received medical treatment. Emergency responders, including KZN VIP Medical Services and private ambulance teams, treated both the injured homeowner and the wounded resident before transporting them to nearby hospitals.

Private security firms, including Swift Private Security and Marshall Security, responded to the scene following multiple distress calls. Greenwood Park SAPS has since launched an investigation into the hijacking and shooting, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell stressed the importance of community awareness and prompt reporting. “This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers we face. We urge residents to prioritize their safety and cooperate with authorities,” he said.

The suspects remain at large, and police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
