An Electoral Commission (IEC) official is set to face charges after being caught transporting voting materials without police supervision. Musawenkosi Mnikathi, the IEC’s Imbali area manager, appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Mnikathi is accused of violating the Electoral Act by transporting ballot boxes in his personal vehicle during last year’s elections. He had attempted to have the charges dropped, but his application was dismissed by the court.

Magistrate Edmund Szudrawski confirmed that the case would continue, stating, "Mnikathi, your matter is now adjourned to 21 January 2025 for your counsel to take instructions in respect of this matter."
