The funeral service for veteran broadcaster and cultural activist Mala Lutchmanan is being held today at the Clare Estate Crematorium, west of Durban. Lutchmanan, who passed away yesterday at the age of 64, leaves behind a profound legacy as a radio presenter, educator, and author.
Lutchmanan spent over 28 years as a beloved presenter on the SABC’s Lotus FM, where she hosted approximately 3,000 programs and played a pivotal role in shaping the station’s religious and language content. She retired from her position earlier this year, marking the end of an illustrious career that celebrated Tamil culture and language.
Prolific Author and Advocate for Tamil Heritage
As an author, Lutchmanan published 22 works, including a Tamil biography of Nelson Mandela, showcasing her dedication to preserving and promoting Tamil culture in South Africa. Her efforts earned her numerous national and international accolades, solidifying her reputation as a doyenne of Tamil language and heritage.
Close friend and historian Kiru Naidoo praised her impact, stating, “Mala Lutchmanan could light up a room with just her smile. The moment she walked in, all attention was on her, yet she remained modest despite her great accomplishments. As an author, broadcaster, and columnist, she was simply amazing. The Tamil language and culture in South Africa are poorer after her passing, but we hope someone from the younger generation will pick up her baton and continue her work.”
Tributes from Friends and Colleagues
Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Les Govender, expressed disbelief and sorrow over her passing. “It is such a terrible shock because she was in touch with me the entire week. Mala and I shared a friendship spanning over 30 years. She would often send me messages and call me Nanba. I will miss that, and her voice on radio. Her teachings and advice through her programs were invaluable. Today, Tamil and Telugu communities bow their heads in sorrow,” he said.
Lutchmanan’s contributions have left an indelible mark on South Africa’s cultural and linguistic landscape. Her legacy as a pioneer of Tamil culture and a champion of education will continue to inspire generations to come.
We at Megazone Radio offer our heartfelt condolences to Mala Lutchmanan's family during this difficult time.
