Former Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has dismissed the fraud allegations against him as politically motivated, asserting that no victims have come forward. Gwamanda made the remarks after appearing at the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto yesterday, where he vowed to cooperate fully with authorities.
Gwamanda is facing charges related to an alleged fraudulent funeral policy scheme that reportedly targeted residents of Soweto.
Gwamanda maintained his innocence and expressed his willingness to engage with the legal process. “I’m not going to ridicule any process that needs to unfold. Instead, I’m going to be part of the process so that we can ultimately get to a point where the truth comes to light,” he stated.
The former mayor also launched a scathing attack on his political rival, Mpho Phalatse, accusing her of fabricating the claims against him. “What I can say right now with confidence and without fear of contradictions is that Mpho Phalatse is a pathological liar. Everything she has said is contrary to what I’m encountering. Those issues she’s raised with victims only exist in her head,” he added.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with Gwamanda’s political opponents urging authorities to ensure accountability. The investigation into the alleged scheme is ongoing.
