KwaZulu-Natal police have intensified patrols in areas identified as hotspots for faction fighting during the festive season, Premier Thami Ntuli announced on Tuesday. The targeted areas include Nquthu, Estcourt, and uMzimkhulu, which have experienced deadly conflicts throughout the year.

Speaking at a media briefing in Durban, Ntuli revealed increased police visibility and additional resources to curb violence during the holiday period, when many people return to their hometowns. "We are aware that some might see this festive season as an opportune time for revenge attacks. To prevent this, we’ve called for enhanced police visibility in affected areas," he said.

The province has also strengthened border security in collaboration with the Border Management Authority and other justice and security agencies. In support of these efforts, 36 new police vehicles valued at over R14 million were handed over to the police station in Mayville.

Ntuli announced that 656 newly trained police constables will be deployed across the province, starting Friday, December 20, 2024. Additionally, 198 Road Traffic Inspectorate officers, 467 authorised officers, and 124 Metro Police constables will bolster operations during the festive period.

"This increased presence will ensure more boots on the ground and improved safety across the province during the holidays," Ntuli concluded.
