United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has stated that the ongoing conflict in Sudan is being exacerbated by external forces, with foreign countries supplying weapons to warring factions. In an exclusive interview with SABC News, Guterres highlighted the impact of these external interventions, which have intensified Sudan's internal problems.

"Look at Sudan, where factions are fighting amongst themselves with no resolution in sight. External forces are supporting them by providing weapons, which creates a toxic mix of internal and external issues," Guterres said. "This is a difficult moment where we see a lack of accountability."

Guterres also pointed to the broader weakness of multilateral organizations in addressing global conflicts, noting that they are unable to ensure lasting peace. He expressed concern over the growing sense of impunity worldwide, with some individuals blatantly disregarding international laws without facing consequences.

While the UN carries out peacekeeping missions, Guterres underscored their limitations. "Peacekeeping efforts are only effective in situations where peace exists. In cases of terrorism and ongoing wars, peacekeeping is ineffective. The capacity of these missions to protect civilians is limited, and they cannot guarantee peace," he said.

Guterres emphasized the need for stronger action to protect civilians globally and ensure accountability for those who violate international laws.
