A woman was arrested at the Home Affairs office in Pietermaritzburg for attempting to register the fake death of her “child.” Authorities discovered that both the child and the birth certificate were fabricated.

The woman allegedly tried to bribe the office manager with R9,900 and a share of a R50,000 insurance payout after her fraudulent actions were uncovered.

The arrest followed a sting operation carried out by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs' Counter Corruption & Security team.

Cyril Mncwabe, the provincial head of Home Affairs, confirmed that similar incidents had been reported in recent months, highlighting an ongoing issue with fraudulent activities at the department.
