A suspected cash-in-transit heist in New Germany, Pinetown, turned deadly on Wednesday evening, leaving one person dead and at least six others injured.
The incident occurred on Otto Volek Road near Shepstone Road, where police cordoned off the area as medics responded to the scene.
Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics confirmed that two cash guards were among the injured. "Both sustained injuries from assault and gunshot wounds," he said.
An unidentified individual, who suffered gunshot wounds to the upper body, was declared dead at the scene.
Jamieson added that four other victims, believed to have been caught in the crossfire, were privately transported to various clinics for treatment.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which has once again highlighted the dangers of cash-in-transit heists in the region.
