South Africa's ports of entry are receiving a significant security upgrade with the introduction of drones and body cameras, according to Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber. Speaking at the Lebombo port of entry in Mpumalanga on Wednesday, Schreiber outlined how these technologies will enhance border control during the festive season.

“No longer will it be the case that people can move around without us having eyes on them,” Schreiber stated, emphasizing the government's commitment to stricter oversight.

Drones, referred to as "eyes in the sky," will monitor activity at five key ports of entry. Meanwhile, border officials will be equipped with body cameras to deter corruption and ensure accountability.

“We want to send a clear message to people who violate South Africa's immigration laws,” Schreiber said. “For the very first time, you won’t even know we are seeing you. We are above you; we are around you, and we are watching for infringements on the borderline.”

The rollout began with the first set of drones being tested at Lebombo, showcasing the government's focus on leveraging technology to bolster border security.
