A devastating fire tore through Malibu on Tuesday, destroying at least seven homes in one of California's most sought-after areas and forcing thousands to evacuate. The blaze, fueled by powerful winds and dry brush, broke out late Monday and quickly spread, threatening multimillion-dollar properties, including those owned by Hollywood celebrities.

The fire, which began in the steep canyons surrounding the affluent enclave near Los Angeles, overwhelmed firefighters, who struggled to gain control as towering flames consumed hillsides and blanketed the area in thick smoke.

"It was like 11 pm. We hear people screaming. I walk outside — the sky is bright red," said resident Alec Gellis. "Within 45 minutes, it’s coming down the hillside and, an hour later, we’re fully surrounded, houses burning on one side, ridges burning on the other."

Authorities have issued evacuation orders for approximately 20,000 residents, urging those in the affected areas to be prepared to leave. Sheriff's deputies went door-to-door on Monday night as the flames rapidly advanced. "Fire can be extremely unpredictable, and we highly encourage residents to heed evacuation orders," said Captain Jennifer Seeto of the Los Angeles County Sheriff.

Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart expressed his resilience in the face of the disaster, stating, "It burns, it comes back, and we’re resilient and strong."

Among those forced to evacuate was actor Dick Van Dyke, who shared a post on Facebook, revealing that he and his wife, Arlene, had fled their home. "We’re praying [our cat] will be okay and that our community... will survive these terrible fires," he wrote.

The Franklin Fire, as it’s been named, had burned through more than 2,800 acres by Tuesday evening, with firefighters continuing their battle to contain the flames. Over 1,500 personnel were on the ground, aided by aerial support dropping water and fire retardant.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state had secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from FEMA to assist with firefighting efforts, while thousands of people in Southern California had their power cut to prevent wildfires sparked by downed power lines.

As the fire continues to rage, authorities emphasize the critical nature of the situation, with the region under a "red flag warning" due to high winds. Wildfires, which have become a frequent threat in California, are often worsened by seasonal winds and climate change, leading to more severe fires that devastate communities.
