Police in Pietermaritzburg are searching for several suspects involved in the attempted murder of an 86-year-old man, who was hijacked near a sports ground in Richmond last week.

According to Provincial SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda, the victim was held captive by the suspects for around five hours. During this time, they drove him around before locking him in the boot of his own car.

The suspects eventually abandoned the vehicle in a forest, leaving the elderly man inside. The vehicle had collided with an electric pole before being ditched.

The victim was found with injuries and immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.

Richmond police have opened a case of carjacking and attempted murder as investigations continue.
