Local government authorities have placed disaster management teams on standby as the South African Weather Service issued a warning for severe thunderstorms expected to hit the southern parts of the province on Wednesday afternoon.
Senzelwe Mzila, spokesperson for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, confirmed that a level warning for severe weather is in effect, with forecasts indicating damaging winds, heavy downpours, hail, and excessive lightning. The storm is expected to affect several areas, including Jozini, Mandeni, Mvoti, Abaqulusi, and numerous others across the region.
Mzila urged residents to exercise caution, especially in low-lying areas, roads, and settlements, which may experience flooding. "Strong winds could potentially cause trees to block major roads, and excessive lightning poses risks to both people and livestock," Mzila said.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advise residents to stay informed and prepared for adverse weather conditions.
