Transport authorities have raised alarm over a growing trend of motorists, particularly younger drivers, using cell phones while driving. Deputy Transport Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa described the behavior as "deeply concerning" and linked it to the influence of social media.
Speaking in Parliament during the tabling of the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s (RTMC) holiday safety plan, Hlengwa said, “The use of cell phones while driving—whether texting, engaging on social media, or recording content for platforms like TikTok—severely impairs attention, reaction time, and decision-making. All this just for online likes.”
The RTMC's CEO, Makhosini Msibi, outlined plans to intensify monitoring on hazardous routes in KwaZulu-Natal during the upcoming December and January holidays.
“Key focus areas include Umkhomazi, Phongola, the KwaMsane vicinity, and the N2 leading to Richards Bay. These routes have been identified as critical for intervention,” Msibi said.
The emphasis on road safety comes as officials prepare for the holiday season, aiming to reduce accidents and ensure safer travel for motorists.
