Weather forecasters predict more hot weather and thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) as summer gains momentum. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned residents to brace for a heatwave, particularly along the coast and in the western and northern parts of the province, expected to persist until Tuesday.
SAWS spokesperson Sihle Dlamini explained that the soaring temperatures are creating unstable atmospheric conditions, a key factor in the formation of thunderstorms. “With high temperatures, it makes the atmosphere unstable, and an unstable atmosphere is an ingredient for thunderstorms,” said Dlamini.
Residents are urged to take precautions during the heatwave, including staying cool, hydrating, reducing heat exposure, wearing protective clothing, and using sunscreen.
In addition, a yellow level 2 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday. These storms are expected to bring heavy downpours and excessive lightning, particularly in areas south of Estcourt, Mooi River, parts of Pietermaritzburg, and south of Durban.
Dlamini emphasized the importance of vigilance as these weather conditions unfold, urging residents to take appropriate safety measures.
