The High Court in Pretoria has been informed that the government must revise the regulations governing the Social Relief of Distress Grant to enhance accessibility for eligible individuals. The Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) argues that millions are being unfairly excluded due to certain criteria.
The South African Social Security Agency, along with the Ministers of Social Development and Finance, are the respondents in the case. Advocate Jason Brickhill, representing SERI, emphasized the need for systemic reform. He stated, “We submit, my lord, that it is our solemn responsibility to focus on the rights of grant beneficiaries and address the issues within the administration of the grant.”
He welcomed the national treasury’s decision to abandon several procedural technicalities related to the case. The court continues to hear SERI’s arguments, with the department expected to present its defense later.
