Motorists and residents in Phoenix, north of Durban, have been alerted to a planned water shutdown by the eThekwini Municipality. The shutdown, scheduled for Thursday, is part of a water supply upgrade project along Stonebridge Drive.

The city’s spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, advised that residents dependent on the Phoenix 1 Reservoir should expect interruptions in their water supply. The shutdown is expected to last for around 24 hours, starting in the morning.

“This water shutdown is essential for the city’s operational team to complete the reticulation upgrade project on Stonebridge Drive,” explained Sisilana. She also urged motorists to exercise caution, as a section of the road will be temporarily closed during the construction period.

Residents are advised to use water sparingly during this time.

Meanwhile, in a separate issue, Isipingo’s Ward 90 councillor, Dharmanand Nowbuth, has raised concerns over water disruptions in the Malaba Hills area. According to Nowbuth, illegal electricity connections from the reservoir to a nearby informal settlement have caused the water pump to fail, leaving the community without water since last week.

“We met with water management officials on Sunday. However, there were threats made to burn their vehicle when they went to manually open the water valve due to the stolen electricity meter,” said Nowbuth. Security personnel will accompany the officials as they work to resolve the issue.
