Learners from Pinelands High School in Cape Town involved in an alleged racist incident have been directed to apologize and participate in workshops as part of their punishment. This follows a viral video showing students auctioning off their black classmates, who were placed in a cage.
Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department, stated that the School Governing Body (SGB) made the decisions regarding the sanctions. The school aims to promote non-racialism and diversity through these restorative measures, which include workshops, written assignments, and community service.
Hammond emphasized that the sanctions are intended to deepen the learners' understanding of the incident's seriousness and its historical context in South Africa, and this approach has been supported by the involved learners and their parents.
