A mass protest against the rising tide of crime, including extortion, femicide, and stock theft, is expected to draw large crowds in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, today. Community members are set to march through the town, voicing their concerns over escalating criminal activities that have plagued the region.
The demonstration comes just a day after National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola visited Mthatha to provide an update on police efforts to combat extortion, which has become a growing problem in the area.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has praised law enforcement for their response to the rise in extortion syndicates.
"We cannot coexist with criminals. We must root them out and make our streets safe," said Mabuyane. "Women and residents should be able to move freely in their communities without fear. A lot of progress has been made as we confront these criminals head-on."
The protest aims to bring further attention to the urgent need for action against these crimes and to support the ongoing efforts to restore peace and safety to the affected communities.
