Eastern Cape Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha has praised the police for their swift and decisive action in tackling extortion in the province. This comes after officers fatally shot alleged extortionist Sakhumzi Mareke, along with two suspected accomplices, during a confrontation in Mthatha. Mareke, previously known as Dalinzolo, had reportedly claimed to be a traditional leader.
The suspects-initiated gunfire, prompting police to retaliate, leading to their deaths. Provincial Community Safety Spokesperson Makhaya Komisa issued a stern warning to criminals, urging them to cease obstructing police efforts or face serious consequences. Komisa emphasized that the days of leniency are over.
Community activist Phumla Mathaya expressed relief, noting that residents had been living in fear. "I am proud that the law prevailed. People were terrified, and there were concerns Mareke had ties to the police. Yesterday's events restored faith in the law, showing that justice still prevails," she said.
