President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for global attention to pressing issues such as climate change and regional conflicts during his address at the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC) in Beijing. Speaking at the event, Ramaphosa emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among African leaders to address these challenges and build a stronger continent.
“Climate change is wreaking widespread havoc, and the world is lagging in its pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals. The global scramble for critical minerals is escalating geopolitical tensions, impacting nations worldwide,” Ramaphosa stated.
In support of Africa’s development, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced a substantial R50 billion commitment as part of a 10-point plan to enhance relations with African countries. This initiative includes zero tariffs on Chinese products for 33 African nations, including South Africa.
Xi highlighted China’s dedication to supporting Africa’s modernization and addressing tariff issues. “We have decided to grant zero tariff treatment for 100% of tariff lines to all Least Developed Countries (LDCs) with diplomatic relations with China, including 33 African countries. This positions China as the first major developing country and economy to undertake such a significant step, turning China’s market into a major opportunity for Africa,” Xi said.
