The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works is taking action to alleviate the shortage of student accommodation in the province by collaborating with housing organizations. MEC Martin Meyer announced that several unused government buildings have been identified for potential conversion into student housing.
One of the key initiatives involves transforming the Palm Ridge Hotel, located in Durban's South Beach, into a student residence. Meyer explained that the department is exploring the possibility of a public-private partnership with companies and organizations specializing in student housing.
“We are looking at setting up a public-private partnership to convert these buildings into student housing,” Meyer stated. “We will offer a long-term lease at a minimal fee, aiming to repurpose the building so it no longer remains abandoned and becomes a valuable asset for the inner city.”
This initiative is part of broader efforts to address the accommodation needs of students and to utilize existing resources more effectively.
