Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has revealed that 73% of crimes, including extortion, are concentrated in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Gauteng provinces. This statistic underscores the significant challenges these regions face in combating criminal activity.

Speaking in the National Assembly yesterday, Mchunu outlined the police’s strategic plan to address the growing issue of extortion across the country. He emphasized that law enforcement, under the ministry's leadership, is actively engaged in daily operations to curb these crimes.

Mchunu provided details of a recent police operation in Milnerton, Cape Town, where officers, acting on intelligence, confronted suspected extortionists. “Four suspects were fatally wounded in a shootout with police, while four others were admitted to hospital with injuries. Two suspects managed to escape,” Mchunu reported.

The minister's statement reflects the ongoing efforts by the police to tackle crime hotspots in the country, with a particular focus on areas where extortion and other serious offenses are most prevalent.
