The eThekwini Municipality is actively working to address the ongoing water shortages affecting the northern parts of Durban. In an official statement, the municipality explained that the reduced water supply from uMngeni-uThukela Water, via the Durban Heights Treatment Works, has exacerbated the situation.
The disruption stems from significant algae growth that has clogged the filters at the treatment facility. As a result, only one bulk pipeline remains operational to transport water from the treatment works to the city's reservoirs. This has severely limited the amount of water flowing into the system, which the municipality notes is already critically low.
Residents in several areas, including Phoenix, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, Cornubia, Mountview, and parts of Durban North, have reported water outages. To mitigate the impact, eThekwini Municipality has announced that water tankers will be dispatched to these affected areas to ensure that residents have access to essential water supplies.
The municipality assures the public that efforts are underway to restore the water supply to normal levels as quickly as possible.
