Police are on the lookout for at least twelve suspects involved in a failed cash-in-transit robbery that took place on Monday morning in the Ndundulu area of Melmoth.
During the attempted heist, two security guards escorting a cash vehicle came under fire. A gunfight erupted between the guards and the robbers, resulting in injuries to the two security personnel.
KZN Hawks spokesperson Sibu Ncane reported that some of the suspects were also injured in the exchange of gunfire. The gang managed to escape the scene.
According to Ncane, the incident began when a bakkie carrying suspects appeared and opened fire on the cash vehicle as it was moving uphill. A second vehicle, also carrying suspects, joined the attack. Despite the violent confrontation, no money was stolen and the guards in the armored vehicle did not sustain serious injuries.
