Ismail Haniyeh, a senior Hamas leader, has been killed in an Israeli attack in Tehran, according to the militant group. Iranian media reports that Haniyeh, 62, was staying at a veterans' residence in the Iranian capital when the attack occurred around 02:00 local time (00:00 GMT). Some reports suggest he was killed in an airstrike.
Haniyeh's death follows Israel's claim of having killed Fuad Shukr, a high-ranking Hezbollah military commander, in Beirut just hours earlier. Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based group also supported by Iran, has been a target in Israel's ongoing conflict.
Israel has not officially commented on Haniyeh's death. However, it has previously vowed to target and eliminate senior Hamas figures following the deadly raid on 7 October near the Israel-Gaza border, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and numerous hostages.
