In a historic Oval Office speech on Wednesday, President Joe Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, emphasizing the need to pass the torch to "younger voices" in order to unite the country.

At 81 years old, Biden expressed his deep reverence for the presidency but stated that his love for his country was the driving force behind his decision. “The defense of democracy, which is at stake, is more important than any title,” he declared, advocating for a new generation of leadership.

In his first televised address since his surprising exit from the race, Biden praised Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, as his likely successor. “She’s experienced. She’s tough. She’s capable,” he said, delivering what may be his final address from behind the Resolute Desk.

Biden's late withdrawal from the race, following intense pressure from Democrats and a poor debate performance against Donald Trump, has shifted the dynamics of the election. Biden’s decision was underscored by a poignant moment as his family, including his wife Jill, daughter Ashley, and troubled son Hunter, watched him from the Oval Office.

Jill Biden later expressed gratitude to supporters in a social media post, subtly addressing those who had urged her husband to step down and endorsing Kamala Harris.

The announcement has disrupted Trump's campaign, which had previously focused on Biden's age and mental acuity. Trump, now the oldest candidate in U.S. history at 78, responded critically to Biden's speech, calling it “barely understandable” and “so bad” on social media.

Republicans have argued that if Biden is not fit for re-election, he is not fit to serve as president. Despite these criticisms, Biden vowed to remain active for the remainder of his term, focusing on the economy and key foreign policy issues, including pursuing a peace deal in the Middle East.

Biden's upcoming meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set against the backdrop of a rapidly shifting political landscape. As Harris continues her campaign efforts, Trump has begun targeting her as his “new victim,” labeling her a “radical left lunatic.”

The 2024 election campaign now proceeds with Harris as the de facto Democratic nominee, while Trump and other candidates ramp up their campaigns.
