On Wednesday, the IFP announced its decision to join forces with the ANC and DA in a national unity government. Additionally, it will collaborate with the ANC, DA, and the National Freedom Party to establish a coalition government in KwaZulu-Natal.
With 17 seats in Parliament, secured through 3.85% of the recent general election votes, the IFP's President, Velenkosini Hlabisa, stated, 'At a national level, the IFP has agreed to participate in the government of national unity, alongside the ANC and the DA.' He emphasized that this decision aligns with the electorate's mandate, emphasizing the importance of stable governance in addressing the nation's challenges.
Regarding their interactions with uMkhonto weSizwe, Hlabisa expressed disappointment, stating that despite a scheduled meeting, the former president Jacob Zuma-led party kept them waiting for hours. Despite this setback, discussions are ongoing with various parties, including in Gauteng, where talks about forming a coalition government are in progress.
Hlabisa highlighted the IFP's history of collaboration, noting its previous involvement in the government of national unity from 1994 to 1999, and its governance partnership with the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal from 1999 to 2004.
