Dingaan Thobela, a former world boxing champion, was found dead in Johannesburg on Monday at the age of 57 after battling poor health, a family member told AFP. "When attempts to reach him on his mobile phone failed, we went to his apartment, gained entry, and found that he had passed away," said a spokesperson, who preferred to remain anonymous.
Known as the 'Rose of Soweto,' Thobela had a professional boxing career spanning 16 years from 1990 and secured three world titles across two weight divisions.
Thobela clinched the World Boxing Organization lightweight title in 1990, followed by the World Boxing Association lightweight crown three years later, and the World Boxing Council super-middleweight title in 2000.
