The remains of 36 additional victims from the bus crash that occurred at Mmamatlakala bridge outside Mokopane over Easter weekend in Limpopo have been identified.
This update increases the total number of identified victims to 42.
Last week, the remains of six individuals were returned to their families at Mokopane Hospital.
The tragic accident involved a bus carrying Botswana nationals that struck a barrier on the bridge and fell into a ravine, subsequently catching fire and burning most of the passengers beyond recognition.
An 8-year-old girl miraculously survived as the sole survivor of this devastating incident.
Thilivhali Muavha, a spokesperson for the Limpopo Health Department, mentioned that pathologists are close to completing the identification process for the three remaining victims.
Muavha stated, “On Monday at Mokopane Hospital, a team including members from the SAPS Victim Identification Unit and Forensic Pathology Services will convene to finalize the packaging of the deceased's remains for repatriation. Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, the MEC for Health, has indicated that the team is currently finalizing the analysis of the remaining samples.”
