Two leaders of the Gupta gang, responsible for a series of extortion-related murders in Khayelitsha in March 2020, were each sentenced to seven life terms for their crimes.
Additionally, they received sentences for attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Western Cape High Court Judge Daniel Thulare described these men as having orchestrated a reign of terror in Khayelitsha, ruthlessly extorting money without any respect for human life.
Judge Thulare also pointed out that certain police officers in Khayelitsha had close ties to the Gupta gang.
