Renowned Bollywood playback singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing, revealing that he will not take on any new film assignments from 2026 onwards.

The award-winning vocalist shared the news in a heartfelt statement on social media, thanking fans for their unwavering support throughout his career. Singh clarified that while he is stepping away from playback singing in films, he is not retiring from music altogether.

“I am not going to be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off,” Singh said, adding that his connection with music would continue through other creative avenues.

The singer confirmed that songs already recorded for upcoming projects will still be released in the coming months. However, future film collaborations will no longer be part of his professional plans.

Singh’s decision has come as a surprise to many, given his stature as one of the most influential voices in contemporary Indian music. He rose to prominence with chart-topping hits such as Tum Hi Ho, Raabta and Channa Mereya, and has also gained international recognition through collaborations including Sapphire with Ed Sheeran, Angels for Each Other and Weightless with Martin Garrix.

Explaining his decision, Singh said he intends to return to his classical music roots and focus on independent and non-commercial projects. “I am going back to my roots,” he noted, emphasising his background in Indian classical music.

While his absence from Bollywood soundtracks will mark the end of an era for film music lovers, Singh reassured fans that his musical journey is far from over, promising continued exploration and expression beyond the world of commercial cinema.
