The Ford Ranger PHEV Flexes More Torque Than the Raptor

The plug-in hybrid truck goes 45 Km without burning a drop of fuel.

A year after teasing us, Ford is finally pulling the covers off the Ranger PHEV in Europe, unveiling it at the 2024 IAA Transportation show in Hanover, Germany. This event, which highlights commercial vehicles, is the perfect stage for this electrified beast. It makes its debut in a special Stormtrak launch edition, specifically for the plug-in hybrid variant. For those wanting something different, the Ranger PHEV also comes in Wildtrak and XLT trims.

At the heart of all three versions lies Ford’s turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine yes, the same engine you’d find in the Focus ST paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Complementing this is a 75-kilowatt electric motor, fed by an 11.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Together, this hybrid setup delivers a robust 202 kilowatts (275 hp) and a jaw-dropping 690 Nm of torque.

That’s right more torque than any Ranger before it. Even the top-tier Raptor can’t keep up, with 491 Nm in Europe and 583 Nm in the US. However, Ford has just introduced a software tune for the Raptor in the US, where you can pay extra to unlock an eye-watering 727 Nm of torque, giving it the edge over the PHEV in outright grunt.

Charging the battery is quick, taking less than four hours to hit full capacity. Once charged, Ford claims the Ranger PHEV can cover 45 kilometres on electric power alone, as per the WLTP cycle. And that battery doesn’t just power the truck it can also juice up your tools, thanks to the standard 2.3-kW Pro Power Onboard system. For those needing more, Ford offers a 6.9-kW upgrade with two 3.45-kW outlets in the bed. Despite the electrified setup, the Ranger stays true to its workhorse roots, with a maximum payload of 1,000 kilograms and a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms.

As for the Stormtrak edition, it comes fully loaded with features like matrix LED headlights, a 360-degree camera, and a 10-speaker B&O sound system. Ford of Europe also throws in the Pro Trailer Backup Assist, 18-inch wheels, fender vents, and a rack system. To top it off, it sports a unique Chill Grey paint job, with Agate Black as an alternative, and a striking honeycomb grille to complete the look.
