South Africa will open their 2027 Cricket World Cup campaign against New Zealand after being drawn in Group B alongside England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and a qualifier.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the group-stage fixtures on Thursday, with the Proteas set to face New Zealand at Newlands in Cape Town on October 9.

The 2027 World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with the tournament scheduled to begin on October 2. The final will take place on November 21.

India have been drawn in Group A alongside defending champions Australia, arch-rivals Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and a qualifier.

India will face Australia in Cape Town on October 7 in a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final. Three days later, they will take on Pakistan at Johannesburg's Wanderers Stadium.

The clash between India and Pakistan is expected to attract significant attention, with the Wanderers being the largest venue in the tournament.

Zimbabwe will host all of their group matches, with two fixtures scheduled for Bulawayo and two in Harare. Their final group match against India will be played at Victoria Falls.

In Group B, England will face both South Africa and New Zealand in Gqeberha. They will take on the Proteas on October 16 before meeting New Zealand on October 23.

Sri Lanka and another qualifier will complete Group B.

The tournament format will see a preliminary round involving the three lowest-ranked teams, with two eliminated before the main group stage.

The remaining 12 teams will then be divided into two groups for round-robin matches. The top three teams from each group, along with the best-performing fourth-placed side, will advance to the Super Seven phase.

The tournament will then move into the semi-finals before the final on November 21.

The India-Pakistan fixture will add further significance to the tournament, given the longstanding political tensions between the neighbouring countries.

The two sides have not played a bilateral series since Pakistan's tour of India in December 2012, when they contested three ODIs and two T20 internationals.

India have won all eight of their previous Cricket World Cup matches against Pakistan, while they have also won eight of their nine meetings at T20 World Cups.
