Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is introducing a long-requested quality-of-life change to the way Double XP tokens work.

Starting with the game’s launch, Double XP tokens will only count down while players are actively in a match. The change means players will no longer lose valuable token time while waiting in menus or pre-game lobbies.

Double XP tokens, which typically last between 15 minutes and an hour, have previously started counting down as soon as they were activated. This often meant players could lose part of their allotted time before a match even began, despite being unable to earn XP during the waiting period.

Infinity Ward is now changing the system so the timer pauses outside of active matches, allowing players to make greater use of the XP boosts.

The adjustment is one of several changes the studio is making ahead of Modern Warfare 4 in response to feedback from the Call of Duty community.

Infinity Ward also recently confirmed that players will be able to toggle off certain operator skins. When enabled, the feature will display default character models instead of other players’ selected skins.

Some players are now hoping the changes could pave the way for further adjustments, including changes to skill-based matchmaking.

It remains unclear whether Infinity Ward or Activision will make significant changes to the matchmaking system. However, the latest announcements indicate that player feedback is playing a role in development ahead of the game's release.

Modern Warfare 4 is also entering a highly competitive release period, with Grand Theft Auto 6 expected to dominate attention and consumer spending around its launch. How that competition will affect Call of Duty remains to be seen.
