The South African Council of Churches (SACC) is calling for consideration of a National Day of Mourning following a recent wave of mass killings across the country.
In a statement, the SACC says South Africa is witnessing what it describes as a serious erosion of the nation’s moral values, as communities continue to grapple with violent attacks.
At least 28 people were killed in separate shootings in Gauteng and the Western Cape over the weekend, adding to growing concerns about the country’s levels of violent crime.
SACC General Secretary Reverend Mzwandile Molo says South Africans have become increasingly desensitised to violence, with the value placed on human life being diminished.
Molo has called on law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible for the killings are identified, arrested and prosecuted.
The SACC says the recent incidents require urgent reflection and collective action to address the continued loss of life through violence.
