National Director of Public Prosecutions Andy Mothibi has appointed a panel to review the criminal case against National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and several senior South African Police Service (SAPS) officials.
The officials are facing charges linked to the controversial R228-million Medicare24 tender.
Masemola is accused of contravening the Public Finance Management Act, while other senior police officers face corruption-related charges.
The matter was postponed to 29 September when it appeared before court on Friday.
The review panel consists of approximately seven senior members of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), together with officials from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).
State advocate Santhos Manilall told the court that the review process has already begun, although he could not provide a specific date for its completion.
“I cannot give you a date when they will be complete with the assessment of this matter. They understand the urgency of this matter. In fact, they know that this matter is before court this morning,” Manilall said.
He told the court that the panel’s report is expected to be submitted to Mothibi before the next court appearance.
Manilall assured the court that the review would not interfere with the progress of the criminal proceedings.
“I will place their findings on record and deal with the matter appropriately there onwards,” he said.
The review comes as prosecutors assess the case involving the senior police officials and allegations surrounding the awarding of the multimillion-rand Medicare24 tender.
