The criminal case against National Coloured Congress Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams has been transferred from the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court to the Regional Court.
Adams is expected to return to court on 11 September in connection with charges relating to his visits to two detainees at Durban’s Westville Prison while their cases were before the courts.
Both detainees have since been convicted.
Adams was arrested in May and later released on bail of R10,000.
The MP has maintained that his case is linked to wider concerns about alleged irregularities within the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team.
Adams is expected to raise these concerns when he appears before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry next week.
He has indicated that his testimony will focus on his efforts to obtain documents relating to an arrest and what he describes as irregularities involving the task team.
Adams has also raised broader concerns about alleged links between members of the police and criminal networks in KwaZulu-Natal.
He said he believes his appearance before the commission will provide an opportunity to place these allegations on record and shed light on what he describes as serious problems within the province’s law enforcement structures.
The Madlanga Commission is investigating allegations of corruption, criminality and interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
Adams’s testimony is expected to form part of the commission’s broader examination of allegations surrounding policing and organised crime in KwaZulu-Natal.
