A Durban Metro Police officer has been suspended following allegations that the official accepted money from members of the public in exchange for falsely promised jobs within the eThekwini Municipality.
The eThekwini Metro Police Department said the suspension follows an investigation by the City’s Integrity and Investigation Directorate.
Preliminary findings indicate that the officer allegedly solicited and accepted payments from individuals while promising to secure them employment in the Metro Police.
However, officials said none of the people who allegedly paid money were part of the municipality’s legitimate recruitment process or the current intake.
The officer is now facing internal disciplinary proceedings as well as criminal charges related to the allegations.
Metro Police Commissioner Sibonelo Mchunu has warned members of the public against paying anyone who claims they can secure them a municipal job.
Mchunu said buying or selling jobs is a criminal offence and urged job seekers to use only the municipality’s official recruitment channels when applying for positions.
The department has reiterated that members of the public should remain vigilant and report suspected recruitment scams to the relevant authorities.
