Disgraced South African lawyer Peet Viljoen was arrested upon his arrival at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday evening after being deported from the United States.
Viljoen was taken into custody shortly after landing on a flight from Newark, New Jersey, following approximately 100 days in detention in the US.
His deportation comes after he and his wife, Mel Viljoen, were arrested in the United States earlier this year for allegedly shoplifting groceries from a supermarket.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) granted Mel Viljoen voluntary departure and arranged for her return to South Africa. She arrived at OR Tambo International Airport on 24 May.
South African authorities confirmed that Viljoen was arrested on outstanding charges of fraud, theft and corruption dating back to 2010.
The former attorney has long been a controversial figure and has previously drawn criticism for posting derogatory comments about black people and South Africa on social media.
It remains unclear when Viljoen is expected to make his first court appearance following his arrest, as authorities continue processing the charges against him.
